National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) has welcomed the appointment of new Commissioners of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
Section 6(2) of the Electoral Commission Act no. 11 of 1998 as amended provides for appointment Commissioners of the Malawi Electoral Commission by the State President.
President Peter Mutharika recently appointed a new set of commissioners to replace commissioners who oversaw Malawi’s first ever Tri-partite Elections in May 2014 after their term of office expired on May 19 this year.
NICE offered congratulations to the new commissioners and urged them to serve the commission and the Malawi nation with utmost impartiality and patriotism.
“Elections are an essential component of democracy. Running the affairs of the election management body is both an honor and huge responsibility which requires commissioners to be professional, impartial and committed to values of democracy,” NICE said.
The new appointees will initially work alongside the Commissions Chair, Justice Maxon Mbendela who remains in the position until his term of office expires in August.
They will take charge of Malawi’s second Tripartite Elections in May, 2019 as well as any other by elections that will take place between their time of appointment and Tripartite General Elections.
